The electrification of global vehicles is accelerating, and the installed capacity of power batteries in Europe, North America, South Korea and other regions has begun to rise rapidly. Data show that from January to April this year, the global installed capacity of power batteries reached 182.5GWh, a year-on-year increase of 49%. Among them, the installed capacity of power batteries in the Chinese market during the same period was about 91.0GWh. From the perspective of changes in top 10 installed capacity of power battery manufacturers in the world, Chinese companies such as CATL, FinDream Battery and CALB are at the leading level in the growth rate of global companies.

In 2022, CATL’s installed battery capacity was 191.6GWh, which was nearly double that of 99.5GWh in 2021. From January to April 2023, the installed capacity of CATL’s power batteries in the global market was approximately 65.6GWh, a year-on-year increase of 55.6%. It is the only battery company in the world with a market share of more than 30%, accounting for 35.9%, which has expanded again from 34.4% in the same period last year.
In the first four months of this year, the installed capacity of CATL power batteries was mainly from car companies including Tesla, Ideal, SAIC, Geely, JAC, GAC, BMW, Volkswagen, Wenjie, Changan, Great Wall, Jikrypton, Hyundai and NIO. Among them, the Tesla (Shanghai) factory drives its installed capacity to approximately 12.9GWh.

FinDreams Battery is one of BYD’s five major business groups. Its predecessor was BYD Lithium Battery Co., Ltd., which was established in 1998. It has been engaged in the secondary rechargeable battery business for more than 20 years and has mastered the core technology of the entire battery industry chain. The products mainly involve 3C consumer batteries, power batteries, energy storage products and BMS, relays, capacitors, fuses and other automotive & battery-related parts and components, providing one-stop service solutions for major customers at home and abroad.
In 2022, the installed capacity of FinDreams Battery reached 70.4GWh, a year-on-year increase of 167.1%. From January to April 2023, the installed capacity of power batteries is about 29.4GWh, a year-on-year increase of 108.3%, ranking first in the top 10. The installed capacity of FinDreams Battery has increased significantly, mainly driven by the surge in production and sales of BYD’s new energy vehicles. According to the data, the sales volume of BYD’s new energy vehicles reached 762,000 units in January to April this year, a year-on-year increase of 91.8%.
It is reported that BYD is increasing the export of new energy vehicles to overseas, which is expected to continue to drive the rapid growth of its power battery installed capacity. In addition, there are recent media reports that the Tesla (Berlin, Germany) factory has begun to use FinDreams Battery’s lithium iron batteries, which will further boost the growth of FinDreams Battery’s installed capacity.

From January to April 2023, LG new Energy’s global installed capacity was about 25.7GWh, an increase of 49.3%, and the market share was 14.1%. Its main supporting models are Tesla Model 3/Y, Volkswagen ID.3/4, Ford Wild Horse Mach-E, etc.

The products are sold to more than 50 countries and regions in the world.
As the only Japanese battery company that has entered the top 10 global installed capacity of power batteries, Panasonic Battery’s installed capacity of power batteries in 2022 was 38.0GWh, a year-on-year increase of 4.6%. From January to April 2023, the installed capacity of power batteries was 15.1GWh, which was an increase of 35.9% over the same period last year. However, the growth of its installed capacity does not depend on the Japanese domestic market and Japanese car companies, but still relies on Tesla’s US factory.
It is worth noting that Tesla’s battery suppliers in the U.S. market are also changing recently. It is reported that LG New Energy may support Tesla’s North American project. The impact on Panasonic battery in the future is worthy of attention.

Recently, it has been reported that Hyundai plans to further deepen cooperation with CATL. Whether it will affect SK On’s installed capacity and market share in the future remains to be seen.

From January to April 2023, Samsung SDI’s global power battery installed capacity was 7.5GWh, a year-on-year increase of 28.4%. The main supporting models are Rivian R1T/S, BMW i4/7/ X and Audi E-Tron.

Gotion High-tech’s 2022 global power battery installed capacity was 13.7GWh, with a market share of 2.75%. From January to April 2023, Gotion High-tech’s global power battery installed capacity was about 4.4GWh, a year-on-year increase of 38.4%, ranking eighth. The main supporting car companies are SAIC-GM-Wuling, Zhejiang Haoqing, Great Wall, Changan and Chery.
It is worth mentioning that last month, Gotion High-tech announced that Volkswagen Group signed a procurement agreement with it, and German Volkswagen will purchase lithium iron standard battery products from the company, which will be used to support Volkswagen’s related models in markets outside China. This is another major market breakthrough that Gotion High-tech has achieved after obtaining the official mass production of ternary and lithium iron batteries in the Volkswagen China market. It is expected to drive a substantial increase in the global installed capacity of Gotion High-tech in the future.

In the first four months of this year, EVE Battery’s main supporting automakers include GAC, Xpeng, Hezhong, Sany and Geely.
It is worth mentioning that EVE Battery recently stated that its revenue in the first quarter of this year reached 11.186 billion RMB, of which overseas revenue accounted for about 40%. At present, EVE Battery has entered the supply chain of international leading OEMs such as BMW, Daimler, Hyundai, and Jaguar Land Rover. Its green battery factories in Hungary and Malaysia also started construction last month. With the continuous expansion of its customer base and the release of production capacity, its global installed capacity and ranking are also worth looking forward to.
