With the rapid development of electric vehicle technology, hall elements(also knows as hall effect sensors, hall sensors), as an important sensor, play a key role in a number of areas such as motor control, speed detection and energy management. In this paper, we will discuss the working principle of hall elements, their applications in electric motorcycle industry, and their importance.
The working principle of hall elements
Hall elements operate based on the hall effect, which is a physical phenomenon that produces a voltage difference in the direction perpendicular to the current and the magnetic field when current passes through a piece of conductor placed in a magnetic field. This voltage is known as the hall voltage and its magnitude is proportional to the strength of the current and the strength of the magnetic field.
In science technology and production according to this hall effect made of hall products, that is, the magnetic field as a medium for the transmission into a certain object source of activity involved in the amount of digital voltage transformed into the way the output.
This product will have the function of sensing and switching, which is used in technology and life. Hall elements are usually made of semiconductor materials, such as Silicon or Gallium Arsenide, they are extremely sensitive to the magnetic field, the magnetic field can be converted into electrical signals, so as to achieve non-contact measurement and control.
The types of hall elements
According to the functions, hall elements can be divided into: hall linear devices and hall switching devices. The former output analog, the latter output digital.
Hall switching devices

Hall switch devices can be categorized into unipolar hall switches, bipolar hall switches, and omnipolar hall switches according to the sensing mode of the hall switch.
The output will change with the presence or absence of magnetic field, when the sensitive surface of the magnetic field components output low, no magnetic field output high, supply voltage of 4.5V-24V, the output circuit is open collector, switching hall elements are generally used in electric motorcycles brushless, motor inside the three position sensors, power sensors, wheel speed sensors and so on.
Electric motorcycles used two kinds of turntable with photoelectric turntable and hall turntable , the current use of hall turntable electric motorcycles accounted for the vast majority.
Hall linear device

Linear hall element is a kind of analog signal output magnetic sensor, the output voltage with the input magnetic density linear change. The voltage output of a linear hall effect sensor IC precisely tracks the change in magnetic flux density. At static (no magnetic field), the output should theoretically be equal to half the supply voltage over the operating voltage and operating temperature range.
Increasing the south pole magnetic field will increase the voltage from its static voltage. Conversely, increasing the north pole magnetic field will increase the voltage from its static voltage. These components measure current angle, proximity, motion, and magnetic flux. They can reflect mechanical events in a magnetically driven manner.
Linear hall elements are directly detected by the magnetic field or magnetic properties of the object to be detected itself, and are generally used in speed regulation, measurement of voltage, current, power, thickness, coil turns and so on.
Hall elements’ application in electric motorcycles
Brushless DC motor (BLDC)
One of the core components of electric vehicles is the drive motor, which is divided into brushed motor and brushless motor. Brushless vs brushed motor, the difference between the two is that the brushed motor is by the carbon brush and commutator for mechanical commutation. Brushless motor is relying on the hall elements to sense the signal by the controller to complete the electronic commutation.

Among them, brushless DC motors are widely used because of their high efficiency and reliability. In BLDC motors, hall elements are used as position sensors. They monitor the position of the rotor poles and send signals to the controller to accurately control the on and off of the motor windings to achieve smooth operation and high efficiency of the motor. If the hall element fails, the motor will not rotate and will not move.
The control board collects the phase information of the motor rotor through the hall element. If the hall element is damaged, it will be considered that the rotor is not rotating and the original drive current will be maintained. Without commutation, the motor will not rotate and will remain in a rotating posture. This is fatal damage to the motor, which is equivalent to long-term overload and jamming!
